How To Beat Your Sugar Addiction Quickly
11/21/2021
Do you crave sugar constantly? And feel guilty every time you indulge? You are not alone!
It is ok to give in to your sugar cravings occasionally, but if you find you are binging on them daily then we may have a problem here. Sugar cravings and addiction can be a consistent cycle which is hard to escape.
How sugar affects us
When we consume foods high in sugar, they convert to glucose quickly which spikes our blood sugar levels.
In response to this, we produce Insulin to counteract the sudden spike in blood sugar, but as insulin is playing catch up, it will end up removing too much blood sugar, leaving you with a low sugar level slump.
Our brain will be triggered by the drop in blood sugar level and go into ‘panic’. This leads to us craving sugary foods to increase our sugar levels again. Quickly we want a cake or chocolate bar. This cycle repeats as we consume the sugary food. This cycle can be seen in the picture below.
Excessive consumption of simple sugars/carbs and highly processed foods will eventually damage your gut lining leading to digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, unintentional weight gain/loss and mood swings. Yes, it is all linked.
6 tips to help beat the sugar cycle
-
Make sure your meals are filling. Add protein and fats to your meals so they satiate you for longer and fuller for longer
-
Stay hydrated - we often confuse thirst for hunger/cravings. Have a glass of water and wait to see if you still feel hungry
-
Avoid staying hungry for long period and eat in regular intervals, the more you starve, the more change of your craving simple carbs
-
Try to opt for healthier snack options such as greek yogurt, fruits, small amount of nuts/seeds, oats, veg
-
Add plant based fibres (probiotics) and probiotic food to your diet. They’ll help you produce a diverse pool of healthy gut bacteria - these bacteria could actually control your sugar cravings
-
Listen to your body. Certain nutritional deficiency could be a reason for your uncontrollable sugar cravings
Beating it won't be easy. Be prepared for vulnerable times. BUT the benefits you will see when you beat it will be extraordinary. You will no longer be on a sugar rollercoaster and you will have consistent energy for the entire day!
It is important to remember that having desserts and sugar foods like cakes and chocolate are ok as part of a balanced diet. If you are feeling guilty about one square of chocolate, please don’t. Occasional cravings are normal. Eat that cake and enjoy every bite. The whole point is to eat in MODERATION!
