How To Increase Your Metabolism
12/19/2021
Metabolism is usually used to describe how easy you can/cannot lose weight. However it is SO much more than that.
What is metabolism?
Our metabolism (which is also referred to as metabolic rate) is the rate at which our cells are able to access and utilise energy through carbs, protein and fats from foods, in order to keep our body systems working optimally. Some examples include;
- Detoxification
- Digestion
- Hormone production
- Enzyme function
- Regulation
- Inflammation
Recognising a slower metabolism and habits to improve it
Anything that slows down the rate of chemical reactions will subsequently decrease our metabolic rate. If this happens, you may experience;
- Anxiety
- Fatigue
- Painful periods
- Stress
- Feeling cold
- Constipation
- Drier skin
- and so on....
Our bodies need energy, and extreme dieting and over exercise can have a big effect on metabolic rate. If your current goal is to lose weight after a long history of yo-yo dieting, this may be why it takes a bit longer to get metabolism up again so you can lose weight - but be patient and ensure you don't have a calorie. deficit larger than 20%
If you do have a history of yo-yo diets, fasting and/or doing excessive cardio your metabolism could use some TLC, Try implementing on new habit at a time to help. Try some of the methods on the right below. But senusre you only implement one at a time so you dont overwhelm yourself.
Recognising a higher metabolism and doing strength training
Yes, some people do naturally have a higher metabolism, however with age this tends to decrease and anyone can have a higher metabolism, you just need to increase it.
When our metabolism is high we experience;
- bBetter digestion
- Warmer body temperature
- Better mood
- And even more from my lost post on facebook.
When your metabolism is higher it means you'll burn more calories at rest and need more food for energy to keep your metabolism high. FOOD = FUEL. So what else can you do?
Increasing muscle mass (and reducing fat mass) is essential for increasing metabolism, this will mean doing some strength training so you can adapt muscles and ensure you are eating more protein so you can build muscle and maintain it.
Remember - strength training and eating protein does not make you ‘bulky’. It will make your body more toned and speeds up your fat loss! Improving your overall body composition. You do not need to be lifiting jeavy weights or gym equipment! Start with body weight exercies, using tins of beans to add extra resistance!
